Meet Baroque composer Élisabeth Jacquet de la Guerre. Introduce your students to the beautiful baroque keyboard music of Jacquet de la Guerre with two coloring pages to color while listening to her music. This 7-page booklet is an excerpt from the Shades of Sound: Women Composers Listening & Coloring Book. (If you have already purchased the entire digital book, you do not need to purchase this.) It includes a biographical sketch and a QR code to access the accompanying playlist. Students will then read background information about two of Jacquet de la Guerre's works, and then can enjoy coloring while listening to the music.

Why does this curriculum work so well?

The Shades of Sound curriculum combines listening with coloring to create an engaging experience for students of all ages. Why does this curriculum work so well?

The reason why this curriculum is so engaging and works so well is that it uses all four learning modes:

Reading/Writing – Students learn about music history by reading about each composer in the book, and reading about the background of the piece and what to listen for. They have a chance to write down what they like about each piece and give the piece a rating.

Auditory – Students listen along using the accompanying YouTube playlist.

Visual – Each piece includes a beautiful coloring page.

Kinesthetic – Coloring while listening uses kinesthetic or tactile learning.

Combining all four learning styles makes this curriculum super engaging and helps you to reach all of your students in different ways.

This book was created to be used in conjunction with the 2024 Female Composers Challenge in March 2024 in celebration of Women’s History Month. It features 31 composers, with the intention being that you learn about and listen to a piece by one composer each day during the month of March.

Throughout the last 300 years, men and women have been playing the piano and composing sonatas, preludes, fugues, concertos, etudes, nocturnes, and more. Our traditional music history that most musicians learn includes so many of the men – men like Beethoven, Mozart, Mendelssohn, Schumann and Chopin – and their iconic works that make up our standard piano repertoire. However, the truth is that there were hundreds of women composing right alongside of the men all throughout history. The aim of this book is to introduce you and your students to many of the “Piano Queens” – the women who made significant contributions to piano literature – that deserve recognition alongside their male contemporaries.

In this book you will learn about Clara Schumann, who almost singlehandedly shaped the standard piano literature that we know today and introduced audiences to Bach and Beethoven through her concerts. You will learn about Hélène de Montgeroult, who was one of the first people to teach that the piano could sing – that you could create beautiful singing phrases by playing legato and lifting your wrist at the end of a phrase. You will learn about Norwegian pianist Agathe Backer-Grøndahl, who music critic George Bernard Shaw called one of the greatest pianists in all of Europe. You will learn about Venezuelan pianist Teresa Carreño, who was called a queen, a goddess, and a lioness of the piano.

You will also listen to a piano work of each of these 31 women. Many of these women were extremely prolific and quite famous in their day; others are lesser known but still wrote wonderful piano music that deserves to be taught and performed today.

My hope is that you will gain an appreciation for these women and for their music – and maybe want to learn some of it! – and I hope that you will pass on the information to the next generation of music students.

Introduce your students to 19 female composers from the Middle Ages to the present day with this Female Composers Bulletin Board Pack!

I put a lot of research into curating a list of 19 amazing composers from every era of music history from the Middle Ages to the present day. This is a companion resource to my Shades of Sound: Women Composers Listening & Coloring Book which includes biographical sketches of each composer, a couple of recommended listening selections for each composer on a YouTube or Apple Music playlist (accessible by QR code), and a beautiful coloring page to accompany each listening selection. This is a great resource to decorate a bulletin board during Women's History Month, or any other time to help introduce your students to female composers.

Digital download, 30-page PDF + 24 image files

Elements Included

The main elements of this resource are the 19 square images representing each composer. I recommend either printing them on cardstock or having them printed as square photo prints at your print shop of choice. I have included image files as well as this PDF so that you can choose which way is best for you to print. Extra elements include a large “Female Composers” title, other text elements and the large composer silhouette. You will receive a 30 page PDF as well as 24 image files, to give you flexibility in printing.

Why Female Composers?

It has become increasingly clear that although we have traditionally learned only about male composers, there have actually been thousands of incredible women who have composed music all throughout history; for many reasons these women have been forgotten and written out of history. It is important to learn about these women because they were there! They lived and worked and composed in the same circles as the famous male composers we all know and love. Many of them enjoyed popularity and fame during their lifetimes. They wrote beautiful music that is worth listening to. And more importantly, we need to show all of our students that girls can compose too. All of us need musical role models that look like us, and learning about these women along with the great male composers enhances our knowledge, perspective and inspiration. Thank you for sharing these women with your students! Working together we can change the music history narrative to include these talented composers.

Have you ever wondered what happened to all the female composers, or if there have even been any famous female composers? The reality is that there are so many incredible women who have composed music all throughout history, yet so many have been all but forgotten. This book will introduce you to 19 of these women, who represent all the musical periods from the Middle Ages to the present day.

Meet Élisabeth Jacquet de la Guerre - a child harpsichord prodigy who performed and lived in the court of King Louis XIV, and who has been called “perhaps the most successful female French composer of all time.”

Meet Maria Szymanowska - a Polish pianist and composer who was the first (twenty years before Chopin) to adapt traditional Polish dances such as the polonaise and mazurka to solo piano music.

Meet Louise Farrenc - a pianist and composer who taught at the Paris Conservatory for thirty years, and finally demanded and received equal pay to the men.

Meet Amy Beach - the first American woman to compose and publish a symphony.

As you read the book, use the included QR codes to access playlists of the music. Then color along with over eighty beautiful coloring pages as you experience the musical works of these talented women. This beautiful music history coloring book is perfect for music lovers and music history buffs, as well as music students of all ages. It is a fabulous music appreciation curriculum for piano students, or a great homeschool music workbook. This book combines music history, listening and coloring to create an engaging and unforgettable musical experience.

Studio-licensed digital download, 156 pages. Print as many copies for your own students as you'd like! Includes individual composer files to send to online students.

https://www.theplayfulpiano.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/10/Women-Composers-low-res.mp4

My goal in creating the Shades of Sound listening and coloring curriculum is to help piano students gain an interest in and a love and appreciation for great classical music.

Aspiring pianists need to know the literature, hear the greats perform, and be inspired and excited by the great music that is available! Just as writers need to read, pianists need to listen! Through this fun and engaging curriculum, students will learn about the great composers and their works. Listening repertoire selected includes selections from the solo piano literature, as well as piano and orchestra literature, and orchestral works.

My hope is that students can add just 5-10 minutes of listening per day to their normal practicing. Listening to great music will change their understanding of music and will vastly increase their music history knowledge. It will excite and inspire them, encourage further study and listening, give them new pieces to add to their own repertoire wish list, infuse more great music into their lives, homes, and families, and will boost their musicianship and expression to the next level.

This music history and listening curriculum utilizes four different learning modes simultaneously, creating a super engaging and memorable experience! Students will read and write as they read the biographical and background information and answer the questions included with each listening example; they will use auditory learning as they listen to the music, visual learning as they look at the coloring pages accompanying each piece, and kinesthetic learning as they color the pictures! We know that children learn better by moving, and so the act of coloring while listening really helps students to remember the music. It is a really engaging experience that all ages, young children all the way up to adults, can enjoy!

Elisabeth Jacquet de la Guerre
